EMG & Nerve Conduction Studies
Electromyography (EMG) is a form of electrodiagnostic testing that is used to study nerve and muscle function. An EMG test can provide your doctor with specific information about the extent of nerve and/or muscle injury and can also determine the exact location of injury and gives an indication
whether the damage is reversible.
SIGNS OF NERVE DAMAGE
- Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, decrease sensation, tingling or frequent feeling of “pins and needles”
- Radiating pain or burning sensation
- Muscle spasm or weakness
- Difficulty performing daily tasks such as walking, buttoning clothes or handling objects
WHAT ARE THE 2 ASPECTS OF AN EMG?
There are two aspects of this test: the first is the muscle test, called the EMG. The second test involves the nerves, specifically the peripheral motor nerves and the sensory nerve, and is called a nerve conduction study, or NCS. When someone refers to an EMG, it incorporates both tests.
WHAT IS AN EMG USED TO DIAGNOSE?
Conditions that EMG testing helps diagnose include: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Pinched Nerves, Radiculopathies, Sciatica, Neuropathies including Diabetic Neuropathy, Muscle Diseases, Muscular Dystrophy, ALS, Myasthenia Gravis.
