Preparing for an EMG
Instructions to Prepare for an Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)
Your Physician/Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant has ordered an EMG/NCS for you. The EMG tests electrical activity in muscles and the NCS tests transmission of electrical impulses in nerves. These are specialized electrode-diagnostic tests to learn more about the health of nerve roots, peripheral nerves, and muscles. These tests can determine if a nerve or nerve root is pinched or damaged, where it is pinched or damaged, and how severely a nerve or muscle is injured.
EMG Ordered: Bilateral Upper Extremities OR Bilateral Lower Extremities
Please follow these instructions on the day of the procedure
- PLEASE do not wear any oil, cream, or lotion on your arms or legs. Disposable electrodes (similar to an EKG) are placed on your skin and will not stick if your skin is covered with any type of moisturizing application.
- It is okay to take your regularly prescribed medication the day of the procedure.
- Gowns and shorts are available, but you may prefer to wear a short sleeve top and shorts that allow access for skin electrodes on arms and legs without having to wear a gown.
- Remove all jewelry and your watch if you are here for upper extremity testing.
Test duration varies based on complexity of your medical problem, but in most cases you will be finished within 30 minutes. The test results will be compiled into a report and sent to the ordering Provider. Please schedule a follow-up appointment with the provider to discuss results.
If you have any questions prior to tests, please call the office.
