Why Would a Doctor Order an EMG?
Understanding the Basics of Electromyography (EMG)
Doctors may recommend an EMG when patients present with symptoms that suggest a problem in the nerves or muscles. Some of the most common reasons for EMG testing include:
- Numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, hands, or feet
- Chronic pain that radiates from the spine into the limbs
- Unexplained muscle weakness or cramping
- Frequent muscle twitching or spasms
- Difficulty moving certain muscles
By identifying whether the issue originates in the nerves, the muscles, or the connection between them, an EMG can help narrow down a diagnosis and guide treatment planning.
